Students Hands-on

A rich learning experience that encompasses technique, style, and creativity. Observing seemingly similar artisans side by side encourages creative & critical thinking, it's an opportunity to learn different problem-solving approaches observing how each designer addresses specific obstacles or makes creative decisions in the design process.

Choosing from the bounty of seasonal blooms on offer, guests are invited to  fuse techniques observed with inspirations gathered from our morning stroll in their own centerpiece design.

Personalized guidance and feedback is generously on hand whether it be selecting the recipe, palette, mechanic, or simply a nudge to push you slightly beyond your comfort zone, we're here .

Session Objective:

Open dialogue: event centerpiece recipes, palette selections, scale and budget obstacles,

styling & capturing your work for social media and marketing.

Max Gill

After receiving his degree in Environmental Science from UC Berkeley, Max Gill was compelled by more creative pursuits, eventually finding floral design the perfect medium as it seemed to him to draw from all of his greatest passions: gardening, sculpture, painting and art and theater history.

We're beyond thrilled to welcome Max and discover how he draws from his passions when designing those awe-inspiring,

large scale masterpieces he's so widely know for.

We'll wrap the day with a group discussion on social media best practices for reaching your ideal market while taking advantage of  the soft glow of the late afternoon light to style and photograph our designs.

Day Two

Sustainable Installations

Styling an installation as a creative outlet offers invaluable experience, hones your skills & helps put time in a tangible perspective - every florists knows, time is money.  Styling not only feeds your creative urges; it teaches how to adapt, adjust and the need for flexibility in the heat of the moment; skills and mindset crucial in floral event & set design, but equally so in any opportunity that comes your way.

The most impactful floral installations are those that not only take into account the clients wishes, but are also thoughtfully imagined, reflective of the venue/location in which they're enhancing as much as they are artfully crafted.

For our morning hands-on, we'll take these considerations into account & drawing inspiration from Jardin itself.

We'll create a seasonal styled-moment/install centered around our luncheon table. This is a collaborative a hands-on; however we fully appreciate that some guests  absorb more by taking a step back and watching. Any retreat/workshop is your time and an investment in yourself-we want you to feel comfortable taking in the knowledge in the way that works best and is most comfortable for you.

After a Leisurely Lunch

The early afternoon is yours to consider some of the design principals covered throughout our time together thus far;

You might choose to refresh your centerpiece, adding some new elements  to take it from centerpiece to statement piece;  you might consider this an opportunity 'Create Content' & spend the time styling and capturing your design; with the blooms that are left, this could be your time to focus on that one thing you don't  get the opportunity to practice. Converse with instructors on some of the challenges you may be facing, or brainstorm with  experts sustainable mechanics options for an up-coming event; Consider this your "me" time.

At about 3 pm we'd like to gather together for a final q&a recap session.

No limits, anything & everything we can answer is fair game and ...

we especially appreciate guests who arrive with note pad's filled with questions at the ready!

We aim to have you ready to journey home with your new found inspirations and knowledge by 4pm, though sometimes we run a little over.  Feel comfortable making travel plans that work best for you &  if you need to head out a bit early, we fully understand.

Special Guest Max Gill

Bloom & Burn started in January 2016 at the kitchen table of a flat in Archway, North London.  After five years creating floral designs for weddings, events, product launches and music videos in the capital Graeme has relocated to a new studio in the Kent countryside where he offers 1:1 and group workshops focused on seasonality featuring blooms from his cutting garden.

TJ’s design philosophy--"Practice is growth and if you believe in your work others will too."  Sustainability is at the forefront of this home-based studio. Whether it be weekly deliveries for private clients, or the limited number of full service events & weddings offered seasonally TJ's work is rooted in local and seasonal expressions of nature.  Education is available through several group workshops, 1:1 private mentoring, and lectures/demos.

Originally from upstate New York, Max has called the Bay Area home for almost 35 years.  Perhaps best known for his work at Chez Panisse where he has done the flowers for over a decade, Max started Max Gill Design in 2005 and now offers full floral services for weddings, special events and private clients. Informed by natural process, Max’s work is distinguished by his reliance on specialty blooms and botanical rarities gleaned from local growers, his own formidable cut flower garden in North Berkeley, and a long list of bay area nurseries.
